Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 0.5 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • 0.75 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups chopped apples
  • 0.5 cup chopped walnuts
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan with butter or cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, ground cloves, and lemon zest.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the melted butter and brown sugar until combined.
  • Stir in the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract until combined.
  • Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Stir in the chopped apples and walnuts until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  • Mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and sprinkle over the top of the batter.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
